Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus - Basil
INSV and TSWV (Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus) are two members of the Topsoviruses which are vectored exclusively by Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis). These viruses have an extremely wide host range (more than 600 species of plants are susceptible). There is no cure or chemical treatment for plant viruses. Inspect plant material at arrival or quarantine new shipments. Do not grow vegetable transplants and ornamental bedding plants in the same greenhouse.
Symptoms of INSV vary depending on the crop. Begin by looking for thrips damage which shows as distorted growth. Brown, necrotic spots are symptoms of virus on basil as seen in this photo. As soon as INSV/TSWV is detected, rogue out infected plant material, eradicate weeds and practice strict thrips management to prevent serious losses.
